Thousands of President Evo Morales' supporters have started a weeklong march from this highland town to Bolivia's capital to demand Congress back a referendum on his proposed constitution.
The leftist leader joined about 10,000 of his supporters Monday at the march's start but said he couldn't walk with them for the full week because of his presidential duties.
Morales said the protest aims to "make those groups in Congress understand" the importance of setting a date for the vote.
He needs two-thirds of Congress to back a referendum on his draft framework, designed to empower Bolivia's indigenous majority.
Lowland eastern provinces oppose the constitution, saying it does not recognize their demands for greater autonomy.
