How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time

My fiance bought this for me for my birthday. I had done some research online and had hinted that this was the kit for me. With other kits such a Mr Beer you have no room to grow into the hobby, not to mention the questionable quality of the kit itself. With the Coopers kit you get everything you need to start the hobby of homebrewing, and you can always add equipment if you decide to continue. The quality of the kit so far as been excellent, although my bottle filler did drip a bit. I did expect that so placing a small towel under the bottle is a good idea, again it was a small drip.
The starter ingredients are bascially idiot proof, just pour in the can and brewing sugar, add some hot water, add in some cool water then the yeast...then the waiting game. Coopers website has quite a few options as far as varieties go. I plan on using the kit at least one more time to get a good feel, then starting more complex recipes.
Anyway this is the kit to get.

This kit works a treat. I am still drinking the beer from my first batch and now shopping for supplies for more of the same. It's better than commercial brews and very satisfying. The only problem with my kit was that the airlock didn't seal due to an extra ridge of plastic from the manufacturing. However the CO2 from the fermentation prevented any outside air getting in. My one wish: glass bottles with caps, instead of plastic bottles! But hey, it's all about the beer and the beer itself is exquisite, like a sweetish pale ale with a thick, creamy head and a slight yeasty aroma. Goes down SO EASY! Oh yes, if Australian means Foster's to you, don't expect that this compares. Although both are lagers and I was always a Foster's fan, the Cooper's Lager has more body and is more flavorful.

I brewed my own beer once before using a Mr. Beer kit and the final product was only so-so. Considering the cost of the refill kits and the amount of time and effort, I decided it wasn't worth it for only so-so beer. The Mr. Beer kit doesn't go into very much detail with the brewing process. It's more like "Boil this for so long, add this, wait this long and you have beer."
With the Coopers Brew kit, much more detail is given to why you are doing these things and what to look for. This results in better beer or at least an understanding on what went wrong and how to make it better next time. This kit comes with a thermometer to get specific temperatures. This kit comes with a hydrometer so you'll know how long to wait before the yeast is done working it's magic (and you'll know how strong your beer is going to be).
The kits to make more beer are much more affordable than the Mr. beer ones. You can actually make decent beer with this kit for about half of what it costs at the grocery store. And the kits come with everything you need, including the sugar added when bottling. The Mr. Beer kit has you add your own sugar, which can be a pain if you didn't realize you need your own sugar and when it comes time to bottle you run out.
Bottling the beer with the Coopers kit is also way easier with the device that is included.
Overall I've been very impressed with this kit and plan on using it again and again.

I got this as a Christmas present, and have been using it since then for a number of brews. I think this is a very good entry product into homebrewing. It is well priced and gives you a good kit to start brewing beers with.
Good points
- fermenter is very large and you can brew 5 US gallon batches with lots of head room, which is very important when you have a highly active fermentation. This reduces the chances of blow off which is very messy.
- fermenter lid allows some visual indications of fermentation and is easier to handle than a glass carboy.
- comes with a hydrometer which is critical for seeing when your fermentation has ended.
- the PET bottles are easy and safe to use.
Bad Points
- lid does require a very tight fit. You really need to crank it until it won't move anymore. This does make it hard to remove afterwards.
- the Coopers instructions set you up to fail. They tell you that its ok to brew within 22-27C which is far too high. You want to aim for 18-22C ideally.
Overall this is an excellent kit that I highly recommend to any budding homebrewers.

I gave this kit to my husband for a Christmas present, since he's a big beer fan. (I prefer martinis, but I'm high-maintenance that way.) He was originally reluctant to try it -- there's nothing worse than a bad beer, he assures me, and he worried it would be a pain in the neck to brew.
Turns out, the process was straight-forward and rather simple. The hardest part, he says, was waiting for the beer to be ready to drink. Once it was, he invited some beer-loving friends over and they each raved about the flavor. "Nice and crisp," said one. "No bad aftertaste," said another.
We did note that the alcohol content is somewhat higher in this brew than, say, the one you'd buy at the liquor store. (Around 9% vs. 6% or so.) I even liked it, perhaps because it wasn't in the least bit bitter.
I just ordered him a couple of refills since he and his buddies polished off the first batch. Each of the Cooper's refill kits contain all you need (besides water) to make another batch while producing about 32 pints of beer, which actually translates into decent savings.
The only downside of the kit is the non-reusable caps on the plastic bottles. (Well, technically I suppose you could re-use them but they won't provide an air-tight seal after first use.) We may fork out for old-fashioned beer bottles (the kind that Grolsch still comes in) as a more environmentally friendly way to, well, make and drink beer.
