As a world chess champion and devoted student of history it was natural for me to look for connections between my sport, its greatest players, and the world around them. When I began to research the evolution of the game of chess it became apparent there were many parallels with the currents of societal change. This piece discusses some of these parallels and the chess champions who epitomized them.

I was told by a friend that I'd enjoy this Short, and I thoroughly did.
This is the raw Gary Kasparov, away from the his more familar chess world confines, divorced from the limelight, separated from fan adulation, the one which often clouds an objective evaluation of the everyday average man, the non-celebrity. Well, not here...
Mr. Kasparov's over two decades behind the chesstables have refined his thought processes resulting in his next logical move--behind the keyboard. As a writer, this blink-of-an-eye glimpse into the Kasparov-ian inner-world shows us that the Second Coming of Gary Kasparov is clearly at hand, folks. To be sure, there are others more experienced in the writing sphere, but with his AN EVOLUTIONARY THEORY OF CHESS, Kasparov makes a convincing case for justifying his position right on up there on the leaderboard, amongst the rest of those greybeard novelists and scribes.
Paragraphs here are clearly organized, and you'll walk away from this mini-read with paradoxically copious food(s) for thought.
What impressed me most were the revelations about Mr. Kasparov's present oppositional activities at part of the United Civil Front in Russia (please have your webmaster translate the site into English or French for us non-Russian speakers?). His continued involvement in the political morass which defines today's blue-red-and-white Russian Federation will ideally result in an entire full-length treatment. Something which perhaps best elucidates the fine print surrounding the injustices of the assasinations of able journalists like Anna Politkovskaya and Paul Klebnikov, newsmen who stumbled into the path of the former KGB colonel's realpolitik.
A short subway ride into just about Downtown Anywhere, armed with your Blackberry? Make sure to download this little gem to your player. What'll you get? Short bite-sized nuggets of historical chess data that'll at least get you curious about what'll Mr. Kasparov be thinking of next. :-)
Five stars, and welcome to Shorts, Gary.
