I own an aluminum 24" iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and a Black Macbook (2.4 GHz Intel, 4GB RAM) and I naively thought Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac would be "equivalent" to the Windows/PC version and was I ever so surprised. Being a Windows-based MS Office user for decades, I thought that the Mac version would closely mirror the Windows edition. Hmmm...not so much. The basic functionality of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Entourage (a PIM which I don't use) is there, but this version does not seem as full-featured or as stable as the Windows version. It's a mild adjustment - the ribbon from Office 2007 is not there and most commands are located in drop down menus - which is not the sleekest method, but functional nonetheless. Another mild annoyance is the Toolbox window - it's not as intuitive as the designer's hoped; but again, not bad, once it's figured out. Some users will find the Mac interface frustrating and may choose to abandon it.
Honestly, if/when I need Office-like tools, I have found it easier to (a) launch VM ware and use the Windows version of MS Office (which runs much faster on the Mac) to ensure I don't encounter any compatibility issues with documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. that I need to create/edit for work or school, or (b) use shareware/freeware packages like NeoOffice, Open Office, Google Docs, Zoho, etc which seem to be more reliable and less prone to crashes/freezes than Mac Office 2008.

I was running Parallels and through it Office 2007 for the PC. That worked fine, but the start up time was too long, and the apps were occasionally flaky. I finally broke down and bought Office 2008. I'm happy now - it starts up quickly and opens up my PC files just file.
I just can't figure out why they didn't just implement the very well thought-out ribbon bars from Office 2007. I do like that it has the notebook view (why doesn't Microsoft take it's best ideas and use them for EVERY version of MS Office?).

I'm particularly pleased with Microsoft Office 2008, because it enables me to download the Attachments I receive without any of the problems I had previously. It was a good investment for a 91-year-old woman who likes to keep in touch with family and friends.

This is an excellent product for high school students. It has allowed me to finish up any unfinished schoolwork, and it has saved me more than once! Where I live not many people have macs so all the projects we do in school is on a windows computer. This microsoft office product has helped a lot.

I upgraded from Office 2004 and actually found 2008 to run slower on my Intel Mac than did 2004! It also hangs quite often while using it (changing tasks, saving, opening a new document) and it's all rather frustrating. The updated interface is actually pretty nice (a lot nicer than version 2007 is on Windows) but the slower speed and glitches make it a step back from Office 2004.
